What is material handling and storage system?

Movement, storage, protection and control of materials during the manufacturing and distribution process, including their consumption and disposal

Material management involves raising, lowering or moving an object in each operation, which is called material handling. Management of materials management activities include a host of specialized disciplines and responsibilities such as mechanical, electrical, hydraulic instrument and electronic equipment,

Basic Principles of Material Handling

Best handling is least handling

Since handling does not add any value to the product, it is advisable to keep the handling cost to a minimum

Use of standardized equipment

Material handling equipment should be selected in such a way that it can afford flexibility and also be able to perform a number of standardized operations.

Minimum use of specialized equipment's

Though it is desirable to have specialized equipment, the cost of acquisition, cost of operation, maintenance, repair etc. should be taken into account.

Payload

Equipment should be selected after careful consideration of the running cost. Economics can be measured by studying the cost of operations involved in operating each move.

Standardized methods

When the methods of lifting, carrying and settling are fixed, the waste of time, labor and equipment will be eliminated.

Capacity of equipment

Capacity needs to be carefully checked, as any over-loading will cause undue wear, and also result in excessive maintenance.

Loading and unloading

A major part of the material handling activity is in loading and unloading and thus this function requires a lot of attention.
