What Will Happen After the Centre Bans Over 230 Illegal Betting, Gambling and Loan Apps
The government of Narendra Modi has blocked 232 apps with Chinese links. On Sunday (February 5), an official familiar with the situation told the news agency PTI that these apps had been blocked for gambling and unauthorised loan services. "Last night, an order was issued to block 138 apps involved in betting, gambling, and money laundering. Separately, an order has been issued to block 94 apps that provide unlicensed loan services. These apps were run by offshore entities, including Chinese. They were endangering the country's economic stability "According to the official.
The names of these apps have yet to be revealed.
Previously, the Union Home Ministry of India recommended that the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) initiate the process, and the latter did so, according to communication. According to news agency ANI, the decision was made after it was confirmed that these apps violated Section-69 of the IT Act because they contained material that was detrimental to the country's integrity and sovereignty.
The decision was based on numerous complaints of extortion and harassment of ordinary people who had obtained small-dollar loans through mobile apps. These apps were created by Chinese nationals who hired Indians and promoted them to operations directors.
According to the report, desperate people were persuaded to take out loans, only to have the interest rate increased to 3,000% per year. When debtors were unable to pay the interest, let alone the principal, representatives of these apps began harassing them. The reps began sending them (debtors) lewd messages and threatened to release their morphed photos and shame them by sending them to their contacts.

The issue came to light following reports of suicides in several states, most notably Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. According to ANI, the state governments of Telangana, Odisha, and Uttar Pradesh, as well as central intelligence agencies, have asked the Union home ministry to take action against these apps. Six months ago, the ministry began analysing 28 Chinese loan lending apps based on these inputs. However, it discovered that 94 apps were available on e-stores and others were accessible via third-party links.
